Stand a pot with open drainage holes on a saturated mat and the soil pulls water up through the holes as it dries, keeping the root zone at a steady moisture level rather than swinging between soaked and bone dry. The reservoir keeps the mat wet, and the mat keeps the pots wet, all by physics.

That steady, self-regulating supply is the real advantage over a globe or bottle. Pot contact is the one people miss. Water can only cross into soil that actually touches the wet mat through open drainage holes, so thin plastic pots and seed trays work perfectly, while thick terracotta, glazed ceramic with a recessed base, or any pot sitting on a saucer cannot draw and will not water. If you love terracotta, this is simply not your method. Mat saturation matters because a dry mat wicks slowly and unevenly; I always pre-soak the whole thing until it drips before I leave, so it starts fully charged rather than spending the first day getting up to speed.
